Terrebonne is one of the Montreal suburbs located out of the island. It is situated in the western part of Quebec province, on the northern shores of the River of the Thousand Islands and The Rivière des Prairie (the Black River). Terrebonne city consists of three districts that are called Terrebonne, La Plaine and Lachenaie. These areas formerly were separate cities. In 2001 they were amalgamated and a hew city was formed and named Terrebonne. In 2006 its population was 95 000 people. The oldest part of the city is the territory of Lachenaie.

It was founded in 1670 as a separate city by Lord Charles Aubert de Lachenaye. However the territory was already occupied by native settlers. The heavy growth of population started in 1647, it was caused by amalgamation of Lachenaie and the Repentigny Seigniory. In 1720 Louis Lepage de Ste-Claire who was a priest and the son of René Lepage de Sainte-Claire, purchased the seigniory of Terrebonne and became its supervisor. The first church was erected in 1734, followed by the first manor built in 1735. In a few years a saw mill and a flour mills were built in the city and it became an important economic centre. La Plaine is a younger part of Terrebonne, it was founded in 1830 on the place where a few other cities stood: Terrebonne, Mascouche, Saint-Lin and Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines.

At the same time a new road was built by Lords of Lachenaie and Terrebonne, and it got the name of "chemin de la Grande Ligne". It was built to join the two cities. Currently this road is named the boulevard Laurier. With the building of rail system in 1877 the economy of local areas began to develop rapidly. A new village was founded at that time, it was called in honour of Saint-Joachim but later, in 1920 it was renamed to La Plaine. The first lord of Terrebonne, André Daulier-Deslandes began to rule the city in 1673. The construction of the first wooden bridge in 1834 caused the appearance of two main centres in the area. Terrebonne became a commercial centre, while Saint-Louis de Terrebonne became an agricultural area.

Finally in 1985 two areas were merged into one that got the name of Terrebonne city. By 2001 the city of Lachenaie had the population of 20 000, La Plaine – 17 000 and the population of Terrebonne was about 46 000. After the merging was done, Terrebonne became the tenth biggest Quebec city. In 2006 the territory of Terrebonne was 154.6 sq. km and the population was about 95 000. The main natural attraction of the city is Fleurs & Delices gardens. Here you will be offered a tour around the wide territory with lots of flowers, fruit gardens and various edible herbs. Site Historique L'Ile-des-Moulins is one of the main historic attractions of the city, as well as La Maison Belisle. Here tourists can see numerous historic and cultural exhibitions.
